Tea Smoothies

Tea Smoothies

I love herbal teas, but once the weather turns warmer I start craving beverages of a cooler variety. This year, I’ve been especially fond of smoothies. I decided to try out tea smoothies as a way to get the benefits of the herbs along with the nutrition from the fruits and smoothie ingredients.

I started by making a super-concentrated pot of my favorite tea. I boiled about 2 cups of water and added 6 tea bags. I let it steep for a while. I’ll admit: I forgot all about it so it ended up being several hours. (I’m not the best cook, ok?) By the time it was done it had cooled down to room temperature. I poured the concentrate into an ice tray and let freeze overnight.

So whenever I want to make a smoothie, I can just pop a few tea cubes into the blender!

What else do I add? I’m especially sensitive to milk during pregnancy, so I use Almond Milk instead. It actually has more calcium than cow’s milk and you can get it pre-sweetened too. I’ve also heard great things about Coconut Milk.

For fruits, I have been craving bananas and mangos. Here’s a handy Database you can reference to learn about the nutritional benefits of different fruits. Some other good ones to add to smoothies are blueberries, peaches, pineapples, and strawberries.

Sometimes I add kale and granola to smoothies. Both are packed with nutrition and give my drink a little texture. A lot of granolas are pre-sweetened so that can be a bonus, too!

There are so many herbs for so many different things, it’s really fascinating to look at what’s out there. When you’re pregnant, you do have to be careful about which ones you drink. But of course there are many that are quite beneficial for all stages of pregnancy and lactation! At Sweetbottoms we carry Earth Mama, Angel Baby teas. I can’t believe I’m already ready to get that Third Trimester Tea! This pregnancy has seriously flown by.
